Tournament terminology

  • Tour - a tour is how you group tournaments together for ranking
  • Season - group tournaments based on a time range
  • Tournament Category - group of tournaments that have the same settings and constraints
  • Ranking system - an algorithm for automating the rankings of players and teams within a season of a tour.

Player and Team terminology

  • Player Category - Group of players that have the same type of gender, age and disability.
    • Ex: Open, Men, Women
  • Player Skill Level - Group of players with the same relative skill level.
    • Ex: Pro, Master, Pro-Master
  • Player Rating - This is a player's relative strength in relation to other players.
  • Player/Team Rank - The rank represents a player's or team's position within a classification, which is based on the accumulated points from the competitions he attended during a season of the same tour.
  • Team Category - Set of rules based on Player Category, Player Skill Level and other player constraints that group teams together within a competition.
    • Ex: Open Singles, Women Doubles

Competition terminology

  • Competition Category - Combination of Team Category, Play Rules and other settings that a ranking system is generated on.
  • Phase - Group of matches within a competition with the same participants that play using the same playing system.
  • Play system - Set of rules that define how teams progress after each match. Example: Single KO, Double KO, Round-Robin etc.
  • Transition - Define how teams progress from one phase to another.
  • Standings - The final classification after the end of a phase or competition.

Match terminology

  • Play rules - Set of rules that the teams have to abide by
  • Format - How the match is being played. Example: games type of match, team-relay type of match etc.
  • Tiebreak - Optional set of rules that are being used when there is a tied match.
  • Points - Set of rules that assign points to teams after a match is finished (only for round-robin or swiss type of playing systems).
